Where will Tesla's next European factory be built?
At stake are billions of euro investments. So much so that the leaders of EU countries are trying to address the decision of Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and the richest man in the world.
On Thursday, Elon Musk landed in Rome for a visit with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi. He then traveled to Paris to meet French President Emmanuel Macron: their second meeting in just over a month.
Meetings made with wine, hugs and conversations. About which little is known, but where business has certainly been talked about. After all, France and Italy aren't Elon Musk's only suitors: Tesla is also in talks for a factory in Spain.
German factory problems
Meanwhile, Musk's sole factory on the old continent, near Berlin, is progressing rapidly and has reached its production target of 5,000 cars a week. Tesla has launched an aggressive price-cutting campaign through 2023 precisely to accelerate volumes and challenge competition, at a time when the industry is facing an economic slowdown.
But Elon Musk has medium and long-term goals in mind: ie. to go from 4 to 12 factories to reach 20 million vehicles produced by 2030. A truly ambitious goal, given that despite this year's records Tesla should not pass. 1.8 million vehicles produced.
Europe is one of the areas in which the company is considering increasing production. According to analysts, Tesla's future megafactory will be used, not to produce models of the current range, but a new generation of low-cost electric vehicles. It is about the long-awaited Model 2 with a basic price of 25 thousand euros, for which Tesla is working.
War for billions
Italy and France are not the only two European powers that are trying to lure Elon Musk to choose their country to build the new electric car factory.
Megjithatë, as qeveria dhe as kompania nuk e kanë komentuar lajmin.
After all, the one with Tesla is not the only file open in Madrid on the mobility front of the future. Spain is scrambling to expand its production capacity for batteries and electric vehicles to help offset an expected decline in combustion engine cars. And recently the Volkswagen group announced plans to build a $7.7 billion electric car center in Valencia.
