French President Emmanuel Macron announced today that France could recognize a Palestinian state in June, during a conference he will co-chair with Saudi Arabia at the United Nations in New York, which he said should also lead to recognition of Israel by a number of countries.
" We must move towards recognition and so in the coming months we will move. Our aim is to chair this conference with Saudi Arabia sometime in June, where we can finalize the process of mutual recognition by several countries ," the French president declared in an interview on the "C'est à vous" program on France 5 given after his return from Egypt on Tuesday and broadcast today.
The conference aims to create a Palestinian state. Calls for a "two-state solution," with the Palestinians alongside Israel, have intensified since the start of the war in Gaza.
About 150 countries recognize a Palestinian state. In May 2024, Ireland, Norway, and Spain took the plunge, followed by Slovenia in June. The two-state solution remains rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"I will do it because I think that at some point it will be right and because I also want to participate in a collective dynamic, which should also allow all those who defend Palestine to recognize Israel in turn, which many of them do not do ," the French head of state continued.
