Trump: China's president is a proud man, but he doesn't know how to

"No other president would do what I did." US President Donald Trump referred to his decision to increase tariffs on China to 125%, while simultaneously freezing tariffs against other countries.

He also accused China, which he called "the biggest abuser in history."

"Someone had to do it. They had to stop because it wasn't sustainable," he said.

The US president then insisted that China wants to make a deal but doesn't know "how to do it."

"You know, it's one of those things they don't really know - they're proud people," he added.

"And President Xi is a proud man. I know him very well and they don't know how to do this. But they will understand. They are in the process of finding out, but they want to make a deal," he noted.

"At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days they steal from the United States and other countries are no longer acceptable," Trump noted.

"Based on the fact that more than 75 countries invited representatives of the United States to negotiate a solution to the issues discussed regarding trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs, and that these countries did not retaliate, I have approved a 90-day pause and a significant reduction in the reciprocal effect, 10%, also during this period."

The US President also commented on the statements of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, where he spoke of a "win-win" agreement between Europe and the US, following Trump's tariffs.

"Okay. "I know him, he's a good person," he initially replied about Mr. Mitsotakis to the American president.

"I appreciate his comments. Yes, a deal can be made with each of them. A deal can also be made with China. Fair deals will be made with everyone," he stressed.

He added, "There is a possibility to find a favorable solution when it comes to trade."

A solution that will be mutually beneficial. This has been my firm belief from the beginning, before the tariffs were announced.

"There is still room for negotiations before we consider any significant retaliatory measures," the Greek prime minister had previously stated.
