The United States is “gradually distancing itself” from some allies and “liberating itself from international rules.”

These are the strong accusations against the US by French President Emmanuel Macron on January 8, in his annual address to French ambassadors, also mentioning "a neocolonial aggressiveness" that is increasingly spreading in diplomatic relations, Le Monde reports .

"We are living in a world of great powers with a real temptation to divide the world," Macron said.

A day after Trump's taunts, Macron accused the US of destroying the world order, warning of an increasingly visible form of "neocolonial aggression" in relations between great powers. According to him, the world is entering a phase where international law is being replaced by the law of the strongest.

"The institutions of multilateralism are functioning less and less effectively. We are evolving into a world of great powers with a real temptation to divide the world among themselves."

"We reject new colonialism and new imperialism, but we also reject vassalage and defeatism. What we have managed to achieve for France and in Europe has been a step in the right direction. Greater strategic autonomy, less dependence on the United States and China," he insisted.

In this context, Macron called for an "urgent reinvestment in the UN," calling any other alternative that would leave the international organization in the shadows "absurd."

Another direct target of Macron's criticism was American pressure on European regulation of the technology sector. The French president called for the protection and strengthening of European regulations for digital platforms, specifically mentioning the DSA and DMA, which, he said, are under attack by American interests.

He also confirmed that the European Commission is preparing the so-called "European Democratic Shield", while France will continue to push initiatives in this direction.

On the economic front, Macron called for an accelerated program of "European preference" in trade, insisting on the need to simplify the single and capital markets.

"A Europe of 450 million inhabitants must exist in reality, not just on paper ," he stressed, hinting that the EU must wake up to global pressures before it is too late./ Pamphlet
