The US and China are taking a reserved stance on Iran, focusing on stability in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio calls for pressure on Tehran, while Beijing avoids concrete commitments.
The US and China continue to maintain a cautious and reserved stance regarding the conflict in Iran, despite the strategic importance of the issue.
According to recent reports of talks between the two sides, the main focus is stability in the Persian Gulf and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, a sea route of key importance for global trade.
But very little information has been made public from the talks between the US and Chinese delegations about the war in Iran, initiated by the US and Israel.
Rubio urges China to put pressure on Tehran
According to reports, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is trying to engage China, Iran's most important trading partner, to exert influence on Tehran to reduce tensions and stabilize the situation.
"If all the economies in the world collapse because of this crisis, they will buy less Chinese products," Rubio said. "So it is in the interest of the Chinese to resolve this crisis. We hope to convince them to take a more active role in this issue," Rubio said.
China, for its part, is following a cautious diplomatic line by maintaining a reserved stance, avoiding clear positions, and speaking generally about stability and dialogue, without giving concrete commitments.
The Chinese leadership also denies supplying Iran with weapons, although it is considered certain that Chinese dual-use goods, i.e. products that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, are sent to Iran.
No concrete efforts towards ending the war
The White House stated after the first negotiations that China and the US agree that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open, but no other concrete details were provided.
Instead, the media again broadcast beautiful footage from the state dinner during the evening.
On Friday, Xi and Trump will hold a bilateral meeting and discuss the many unresolved problems and conflicts./DW
