The military alliance's secretary general, Mark Rutte, said NATO has absolutely no plans to get involved in a war with Iran, although he praised the action of the US and Israel.
In an interview with German television ARD in Brussels, Mark Rutte described the US and Israeli operations as "very important".
"It's destroying, it's degrading Iran's ability to secure nuclear capability, ballistic missile capability. There is absolutely no plan for NATO to get involved in this or be part of it, except that individual allies would do their best to enable what the Americans are doing together with Israel ," he told ARD.
Rutte's comments come as individual NATO members are calibrating their responses to the escalating conflict. The United Kingdom, for example, has said it is not part of the offensive against Iran but has agreed to allow its military bases to be used for "defensive" strikes on Iranian missile stockpiles.
On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Germany and France said in a joint statement that they would take steps to protect our interests and those of our allies in the region, potentially enabling necessary and proportionate defensive action to destroy Iran's ability to shoot down missiles and drones at their source.
