A 37-year-old man opened fire in several areas of Tarsus, the police launch a major operation with helicopters to capture the perpetrator
Turkey has been rocked again by another serious gun attack, this time in the Tarsus district of the southern province of Mersin, where 5 people were killed and 8 others were injured after a series of armed attacks in several different areas.
According to Turkish media, the suspected perpetrator, identified as Metin Öztürk, 37, first shot and killed his ex-wife Arzu Özden, 32, in the Darıpınarı neighborhood of Çamlıyayla district.
After the crime, the perpetrator left in a vehicle with license plates "01 B 9171" and headed to the Tarsus district, where he continued armed attacks in various areas.
One of the most serious attacks took place in the Kadelli Dörtler neighborhood, where Metin Öztürk drove up to the restaurant owned by Sabri Pan and opened fire on the people there.
As a result of the shooting, restaurant owner Sabri Pan died in hospital, while employee Ahmet Ercan Can died at the scene.
After the attack on the restaurant, the perpetrator fled in a vehicle and continued shooting in other areas. In the Kaburgediği neighborhood, he killed Yusuf Oktay, a young man who was grazing animals, while in the Yenimahalle neighborhood, he shot and killed truck driver Abdullah Koca near his apartment. It was later discovered that a gas station employee was also killed, bringing the death toll to 6.
During the escape, the perpetrator injured eight other people along his route. Authorities warned that the number of injured could rise.
Numerous police, gendarmerie and ambulance units were sent to the scene, while security forces launched a large-scale operation with helicopter support to capture the perpetrator, who remains at large.
The attack comes as Turkey faces growing concerns about gun violence among young people. Just a month ago, the country was rocked by two other attacks carried out by teenagers. The first incident left 16 people injured, while the second attack killed 10 people, most of them schoolchildren.
