China has reaffirmed its support for Iran through a strong statement by its ambassador to Tehran, Zhong Peiwu, just days after the meeting between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
According to the Iranian state news agency ISNA, the Chinese diplomat stressed that Beijing's support for Iran is "clear and unquestionable," underlining that in difficult times, true allies are distinguished.
"Under these circumstances, it is difficult to understand which countries are real friends. We are ready to play our role in the reconstruction of Iran, not only in bilateral relations, but also in the international arena and in the protection of justice," Zhong Peiwu declared.
The statement comes less than a week after Donald Trump's two-day visit to Beijing, where he held talks with President Xi Jinping. However, according to international media, there were notable differences between the way the US and China handled the issue of Iran and the Middle East in public statements after the meeting.
While the American side placed more importance on tensions and conflicts in the region, Beijing mentioned Iran and the Middle East only briefly, avoiding confrontational tones.
China's latest stance is seen as a clear signal that Beijing intends to maintain and strengthen strategic ties with Tehran, despite growing pressure and rivalry with the United States.
