
Aides to late opposition politician Alexei Navalny said they are unable to find a venue in the Russian capital to hold a public farewell ceremony for the Kremlin critic, after his mother said she was blackmailed by officials into keeping it a secret. a farewell ceremony for the son.
" We have called most of the private and state funeral agencies, commercial entities and those that organize farewell ceremonies. Some said they have their seats taken, others refused to speak after hearing Navalny's name ," spokeswoman Kyra Yarmysh said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
" In one place we were told directly that they have been ordered not to cooperate with us ," she added, a day after publishing a post saying Navalny's team was looking for a place to hold a public farewell ceremony on Friday.
Navalny's family members have not yet confirmed details of the farewell ceremony and funeral for the Kremlin critic.
On February 26, the Baza Telegram channel, citing unidentified sources, said that at the Borisovskoe cemetery in Moscow, workers had begun preparations for Navalny's burial overnight, adding that the preliminary date for this ceremony was set for February 29.
Several channels on Telegram have mentioned possible places where Navalny could be buried and that all the cemeteries mentioned were in Moscow.
Navalny's body was handed over to his mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, on February 24, more than a week after he died under suspicious circumstances in an Arctic prison. The cause of the 47-year-old's death has not yet been made public.
Before handing over her son's body, his mother said authorities had set conditions on where, when and how Navalny would be buried, adding that authorities wanted the ceremony to be secret.
Hundreds of Russians have been arrested during tributes to Navalny across Russia.
Navalny's family, associates and Western officials have blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for his death. Russian officials have denied these allegations.
