Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spent a weekend in New York, where she stayed to watch the US Open final between Sinner and Alcaraz. The visit caused controversy after 'Italia Viva' filed a request for clarification on Meloni's stay in the US.
According to some sources, the Prime Minister used a state flight to reach New York. A version, however, categorically denied by the Prime Minister herself and by Palazzo Chigi.
Meloni, the statement said, spent the weekend in New York in a private setting with her daughter Ginevra, whose birthday is in a few days. The trip was a birthday gift for her daughter.
" Does the Prime Minister intend to clarify the reasons why she did not participate in any of the events that took place over the weekend from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8? Does she intend to clarify whether or not she participated in any unpublished institutional event, in Italy or abroad, as some journalistic sources have suggested, in New York on a state flight? " writes Senator Enrico Borghi, member of COPASIR.
In a message later posted on social media, Prime Minister Meloni responded to the controversies by describing them as untrue and fabricated.
Leggo, con un misto di amarezza e indignazione, l'ennesima polemica guitita ad arte sul nulla.

“I read, with a mixture of bitterness and indignation, another controversy skillfully constructed from nothing. For two days, I chose to do what I consider my most beautiful and natural role: being a mother. I gave my daughter a weekend abroad together for her birthday, traveling on scheduled flights, like any other person and as is normal. However, even this private decision has been turned into a political weapon, with allusions to state flights and secret meetings that never took place. All false.
"I proudly claim the right to devote time, whenever possible within my role, to my daughter, without this becoming another pretext for petty attacks and political speculation. There are lies that I face with determination every day. But I also fight this as a woman and mother. And if some of my political opponents are forced to attack me for even a weekend with my daughter, that means they have truly reached the end," Meloni replied.
