Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted to US President Donald Trump's statements, emphasizing that disagreements should not affect the strategic relationship between Italy and the United States.
In a public statement, Meloni said she was not hurt by Trump's comments and that she considers differences in positions among allies natural. " I expected this. I think courage lies in expressing an opinion even when we disagree ," she declared.
She added that strong relations are built on this very foundation: sincerity and willingness to openly express positions. According to her, this does not question the historical relations with the US, but strengthens them. “ Friends help you even when they say they disagree ,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
Meloni also touched on the situation in the Gulf of Hormuz, recalling that Italy had proposed that a possible mission in the area be covered by the United Nations. According to her, this initiative was not implemented due to the veto in the Security Council by the US and China.
She stressed that if the veto is not lifted in the coming weeks, any engagement should be conditioned by a ceasefire and broad international support. Meloni underlined that any mission should be solely defensive in nature.
In conclusion, she stated that Italy should participate in such an initiative, but the final decision rests with Parliament, respecting the country's institutional procedures.
