The heat has again affected all of Europe. In Spain, temperatures 10 degrees above normal are unusual this early October. In northern Galicia, where temperatures are usually cooler, locals packed the beaches.
The Spanish weather agency AEMET expects the unusual heat to last until Tuesday with parts of the country under high fire risk.
Temperatures between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius were recorded in Córdoba and Seville. The heat is being attributed to a high pressure system with high temperatures moving mainly from Africa towards the Iberian Peninsula.
The heat has also affected some regions of Portugal. Temperatures are expected to be five to eight degrees warmer than average, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere. France has also recorded thermal values above 33 degrees Celsius in the southern part of the country.
