A misunderstanding and lack of coordination between German authorities nearly turned a military exercise in the Hohenlindener Straße area of Altenerding in the Municipality of Erding into a tragedy.
According to German media outlet BILD, the Bundeswehr military police were conducting a training exercise in the area. Uninformed residents called the emergency number and reported that masked individuals with rifles were hiding around the barns, prompting the state police to issue a full-scale alert.
When the alerted officers arrived at the scene, the military police apparently thought this was also part of the exercise and fired practice rounds at the police. The police, in turn, fired live ammunition, wounding a Bundeswehr soldier. Fortunately, the soldier was reportedly not seriously injured and was rushed to hospital.
Current reports suggest that the police were aware of the exercise. According to 'BILD', police officers were allegedly involved in the exercise, but it is still unclear why the state police in Erding did not know anything about it.
Currently, checkpoints have been set up around the scene. According to police, there is and has been no danger to the public.
Multiple emergency services, including the fire department, are at the scene in the Hohenlindener Straße area of Altenerding. A police helicopter is also flying over the area and blue lights are visible everywhere.
