German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Germany is preparing for a prolonged war in Ukraine, stressing that the end of the conflict cannot come at the expense of Kiev's capitulation.
“We hope to finish it as soon as possible,” Merz said in a statement shared on social media, “but not at the price of giving up Ukraine. If we give up Ukraine, then tomorrow it will be another country, and the day after tomorrow it will be us.”
The Chancellor's statement comes at a time when Moscow has also confirmed that it is ready to continue the war for as long as necessary. Recent negotiations in Washington, held by US President Donald Trump with European leaders, did not bring any visible progress, creating the impression that both sides are prepared for a prolonged conflict.
This stance by Berlin is a clear signal to NATO allies that Europe must prepare for a new phase of the war, where military and economic aid to Ukraine will continue indefinitely.
