Amid disputes and protests, the British Parliament gives the 'green

Assisted dying could become legal in England and Wales after the bill was backed by MPs in a historic vote. Humanists in the UK have welcomed the result of the vote.

The landmark bill gives some terminally ill people the right to end their lives.

Therefore, the law received 330 in favor and 275 against. MPs who did not support this initiative called for better care at the end of each person's life.

The bill would allow adults with only six months to live to seek medical help to end their lives.

Today's result means the legislation will now go to committee stage for scrutiny, where the Lords will also be given opportunities to express their views before it becomes law.

MPs were given the opportunity to take their stand rather than the party line, while the government remained neutral on the issue.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer backed the proposal, as did Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.

But other cabinet members such as Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood voted against the bill.
