A supposed warning from the Iranian military chief to US carriers in the Strait of Hormuz turns out to have come from a fake account on the social network X. The news was published by the semi-official Iranian Fars agency, which is often considered close to the country's military structures.
The post, shared on Monday, featured a statement attributed to Major General Amir Hatami. It said that “every inch of these waters is within the reach of our will” and mentioned the use of cruise missiles and combat drones. The message was widely shared on social media and was interpreted as a direct warning to the US military presence in the region.
However, Fars later clarified that the post was not authentic and came from a fake account, which has been suspended. The clarification is intended to distance Iranian authorities from statements that could be interpreted as further escalation of military rhetoric.
The development comes at a time of heightened tension in the Persian Gulf, where incidents between Iranian and US forces have intensified. According to the US military, after the release of the alleged message, US forces intervened by destroying six small Iranian naval vessels and neutralizing missiles and drones launched at their ships and protected commercial vessels.
The event also highlights the role of disinformation in sensitive security situations, where false messages can influence public perception and military reactions on the ground.
