EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to focus on the Ukraine war and the US decision to allow Kiev to use US long-range missiles on Russian territory. The outgoing head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, also expressed concern about China's growing role in the war in Ukraine.
According to him, there is an increase in Chinese supplies, especially with so-called dual-use goods - that is, they can be used both for peace purposes and for war purposes.
"Without North Korea, without Iran, without China, Russia would not be able to continue its military efforts. The announcements that these three countries supply Russia with complete weapon systems are disturbing."
On the eve of the meeting, it was announced that the EU had received reports from the secret services about an arms factory in China, which is believed to be supplying Russia with drones for the war against Ukraine. A senior EU official said, however, that there is still no clear evidence for this. Brussels believes that it is impossible for such a company to operate without the knowledge of the Chinese leadership.
However, this has been rejected by Beijing. However, EU foreign ministers are now considering taking tougher steps against China. "Chinese drone aid" must and will have consequences, said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. Her Finnish counterpart, Elina Valtonen, made it clear that there can no longer be "business as usual" in trade with China if it turns out that the country is compromising Europe's security.
EU Foreign Ministers on the other hand welcomed the US decision on the missiles. In addition to the US, Ukraine has been supplied with long-range missiles by the United Kingdom and France, but so far no country has officially allowed Ukraine to use them to attack military targets on Russian territory.
