Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, cannot show his face in public, hours after Tehran released what is believed to be his first public statement.

"We have killed the previous dictator and the new dictator Mojtaba, who is a puppet of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), cannot show his face in public ," Netanyahu said at a press conference on Thursday.

Khamenei has not been seen in public since Iran announced on Sunday that he would take over as supreme leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in what Iranian officials describe as joint US-Israeli attacks on Tehran.

On Thursday, Iranian state media released what is believed to be Mojtaba Khamenei's first public message, but he did not appear on video or release an audio statement. Rumors that Mojtaba was injured in the US and Israeli bombing campaign have been circulating for days.

Asked about the fate of Mojtaba Khamenei, Netanyahu refused to reveal whether Israel had any plans to attack him, saying he could not give guarantees for his life.

" I would not give a life insurance policy to any of the leaders of this terrorist regime and I will not give you an exact report on what we are planning and what we are going to do ," he said.

The Israeli prime minister added that the military had "severely hit" Iran and its allies and significantly reduced their capabilities, but added that Israel was "committed to completing this task."

One of these representatives is the militant group Hezbollah, which Israel says it has targeted in its attacks on Lebanon. Israel is also considering a ground operation in southern Lebanon.

Asked if Israel planned to take any territory in Lebanon, Netanyahu said he urged the Lebanese government to remain true to its commitment to disarm the militant group.

“If it doesn’t do that, then we will have no choice but to do it with our own methods. Whether on the ground or in other ways, I won’t specify here, but I can promise you that, as I said, we will exact a very heavy price from Hezbollah ,” Netanyahu said.
