Serbia's progress towards EU membership has stalled in recent years, according to a draft report by the European Parliament on Serbia. The main concerns relate to the state of democracy and the rule of law.
The European Parliament's draft report on Serbia assesses that the country's progress towards membership in the European Union has practically stopped in recent years.
“ In recent years, Serbia’s progress towards EU membership has stalled, with concerns mainly focused on the state of democracy and the rule of law. There are a number of urgent issues that need to be addressed, in particular the polarization and increased political tensions, the need for structural reforms in the area of the rule of law, the fight against corruption and other EU-related issues, as well as the need to reach a comprehensive agreement on the normalization of relations with Kosovo, along with full alignment with EU foreign policy, ” reads the draft report by the rapporteur for Serbia in the European Parliament, Tonino Picula.
The document also states that Serbia has not made significant progress in fulfilling the conditions for membership in many negotiation chapters. The draft report also expresses concern about the political situation in Serbia, in the context of the mass protests that have been taking place there since November 2024.
" These protests reflect deep-rooted dissatisfaction among citizens and students, who demand accountability and reforms related to the rule of law," it further states.
It also mentions the terrorist attack in Banjska, Zvečan, on September 24, 2023, where police sergeant Afrim Bunjaku was killed. It calls for the perpetrators of the attack, especially the chief terrorist Milan Radoićić, to be prosecuted.
"We expect Kosovo and Serbia to fully cooperate and take all necessary measures to bring the perpetrators of the terrorist attack in Banjska in 2023 to justice quickly, and we regret the fact that Serbia has not yet prosecuted the perpetrators, especially Milan Radoicic, vice-president of the Serbian List," the document states.
