Moldovan authorities have announced that they have uncovered a suspected Russian-coordinated network that involves training Moldovan citizens in Serbia to incite "mass unrest" ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, September 28.
The move comes as part of a wider investigation, which saw 250 raids across the country on September 22, resulting in the arrest of 74 people suspected of participating in a destabilizing plan supported by Moscow through criminal groups. According to an official statement from the Moldovan police and security services, most of those arrested had received training in the Serbian city of Niš, where suspected Russians were involved in organizing these sessions.
Authorities in Chisinau accuse the Serbian government of being aware of these activities, but official Belgrade has not yet given any official reaction, neither denial nor admission.
"This is a direct attempt to obstruct the democratic will of our people ," a Moldovan government spokesman declared, stressing that the investigation has uncovered links to pro-Kremlin elements aiming to create chaos on voting day.
This is not the first time Moldova has made such accusations against Serbia. In October 2024, ahead of parliamentary elections and a key referendum, authorities alleged that Moldovan citizens were being trained in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to organize violent protests.
At the time, Bosnia had expelled a Russian citizen suspected of coordinating these training camps. Today, the situation seems even more tense, with upcoming elections that could be crucial for Moldova's path to European Union membership.
European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has confirmed that the European Commission is fully aware of Russian efforts to influence the Moldovan electoral process.
"Russia is using the tactics of vote-buying, disinformation and organizing unrest to hinder Moldova's European integration ," she said in a statement released on Wednesday.
