Psychiatrists raise alarm about Trump: Delusion of grandeur and loss of control

United States President Donald Trump is facing a new wave of criticism for his communication style and public behavior, while debate has intensified in the US over his mental state and ability to perform his duties.

In recent months, Trump's public appearances have been characterized by an increasingly harsh tone and the use of extreme language. In one of the most controversial statements, referring to Iran, he said that "we will return them to the Stone Age," a formulation that was widely criticized as excessive and escalating.

This approach has been accompanied by a series of actions and proposals that have sparked debate, including ideas for major symbolic changes to the White House, monumental projects, and initiatives that have drawn attention for their unusual nature. At the same time, clashes with institutional and media figures have increased, including criticism of the head of the Federal Reserve and lawsuits against the media.

One of the most commented episodes was the clash with Pope Leo, which was followed by strong reactions from representatives of the Catholic Church in the US. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley stated that “it is disturbing that the president uses derogatory language towards the Holy Father”, while other religious figures called for more restraint and respect in public discourse.

In parallel with these developments, polls show a noticeable decline in support. A March 21 American Research Group poll puts the approval rating at 34%, while 63% of respondents say they are against it. Another Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 61% of Americans consider Trump more unpredictable over time, while only 45% describe him as “mentally clear.” Also, 49% of respondents think he is too old to be president.

The debate has also been fueled by comments from mental health experts. Clinical psychologist John Gartner describes Trump as having “malignant narcissism,” linking his behavior to a destructive personality pattern. On the other hand, Professor Allen Frances, an authority on personality disorders, rejects remote diagnoses but calls Trump a “narcissist at extreme levels.”

The “Goldwater rule,” which warns against making public diagnoses without direct clinical examination, is often mentioned in this context. However, many experts agree that elements such as the decline in self-control, the use of hyperbolic language, and difficulties in clearly structuring messages have become more apparent.

Criticism has also come from within the conservative camp. Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called Trump's rhetoric "pure madness," while other prominent media figures have questioned his coherence and consistency in communication. Even commentators who previously supported him, such as Alex Jones and Candace Owens, have expressed criticism.

Meanwhile, part of the Republican Party continues to support the president, although the first signs of distancing have begun to appear, especially in the context of the political cost that these developments may have.

The White House has denied the allegations, stressing that Trump is fully capable and uses a deliberate communication style to keep pressure on opponents and dominate public debate.

In this climate, the discussion about the president's leadership style, his stability and influence on decision-making remains at the center of the political debate in the United States. / Corriere Della Sera
