An Israeli strike hit the Qlaileh area in southern Lebanon on Sunday, sending smoke visible from the nearby city of Tyre. The incident comes on the same day that new US-brokered talks between Israel and Lebanon are expected to begin.

According to Reuters, these negotiations constitute the first contacts of this level between the two countries since 1993, a period when dialogue was focused mainly on security and border issues after decades of conflict.

The current clashes are linked to the presence and activity of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The group is seen by Israel as a direct threat to its security, while Lebanon considers it part of its internal political and military reality. Hezbollah is supported by Iran and has been involved in several conflicts with Israel, including the 2006 war that caused extensive damage on both sides of the border.

In this context, the Lebanese authorities aim to reach a ceasefire that would reduce tensions in the south of the country and avoid a wider escalation. On the other hand, Israel seeks the disarmament of Hezbollah and the limitation of its presence near the border.

The talks are taking place in Washington, DC, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also expected to attend. The US role is seen as key in mediating between the parties and in efforts to stabilize the situation in the region.

Recent developments show that, despite the opening of a diplomatic channel, the situation on the ground remains fragile and influenced by broader regional dynamics.
