The Italian government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense cooperation memorandum with Israel, a framework agreement signed in 2003 and entered into force in 2006, which was automatically renewed every five years.
The decision was formalized in a letter that Defense Minister Guido Crosetto sent to his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the news during a visit to Verona, saying that “in light of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel .”
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini agreed with the suspension, but when asked about the specific reasons, he simply replied: "I don't know the reasons ."
According to Israeli sources, this decision is not expected to have a significant practical impact. The Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that we do not have a security agreement with Italy, but only a memorandum that never had concrete content.
The text of the agreement contains 11 articles and establishes a framework for cooperation that includes meetings between defense ministers, exchange of information and experiences, joint military exercises, invitations of observers, cultural activities, as well as opportunities for industrial cooperation in the military sector. The suspension comes in a context of tensions in the Middle East, following recent developments that have also affected relations between Western allies.
