Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has responded to European Commissioner Marta Kos' criticism of a series of judicial laws adopted yesterday. Vučić said he did not know why Kos was criticizing him, because he had not even read those laws.

"I checked the constitutionality of the law because that's my job. I don't know how it's a step backwards when we haven't taken a single step forward for four years. Where are we going now? It's up to the competent authorities to deal with it and they will deal with it in the future," Vučić said.

Asked about the objections of the President of the Constitutional Court, Vladan Petrov, to the adopted laws, Vučić said that he is a serious man and that he has not noticed that there has been any major objection.

"I received assurances from my associates that the laws are in accordance with the Constitution. Ultimately, that is the only thing I care about. What I can complain about is that there should have been a broad public discussion," Vučić said, emphasizing that the changes will not come at the expense of the interests of citizens.

We recall that Serbian MPs approved changes to the set of laws on the judicial system proposed by President Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party, which, according to the opposition, increase the government's control over the judicial system and reduce the powers of the country's High Prosecutorial Council.

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has reacted strongly to the decision of the Serbian Parliament to limit the independence of the judiciary. She stressed that the independence of the judiciary remains one of the main pillars of the rule of law and an essential criterion for rapprochement with the EU.
