Tensions between the US and Iran are escalating significantly, as military attacks, threats and clashes in the Strait of Hormuz are pushing the region towards a wider conflict.
United States President Donald Trump has declared that American forces have struck and destroyed 10 Iranian ships that he said were attempting to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on social media, Trump announced that the operation had taken place over the past few hours and warned that further attacks could follow.
"I am pleased to announce that within the last few hours we have struck and completely destroyed 10 inactive boats and/or ships that were laying mines, and there will be more," he wrote.
Earlier, regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump declared that the US will use force against any ship that attempts to undermine the strategic maritime corridor.
According to him, the US military is using the same technology and missile capabilities that have been used in operations against drug traffickers to destroy ships that try to lay mines in this area.
"If Iran had placed mines in the crucial waterway, they had to be removed immediately or Iran would face military consequences on a level never seen before. They will be dealt with swiftly and violently. Be careful!" he warned.
At the same time, the US administration has carried out similar operations against ships suspected of transporting narcotics in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific. These operations have reportedly killed more than 100 people, while some legal experts have raised concerns that the attacks may violate international law.
