US President demands immediate removal of any potential mines in strategic oil strait
United States President Donald Trump warned Iran of severe military consequences if it is found to have placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping routes.
In a post on social media, Trump stated that Washington demands that any potential mines in this strategic maritime corridor be removed immediately.
" If Iran has placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and we have no reports that it has, we want them removed immediately ," he wrote.
The US president warned that if the mines are placed and not removed immediately, the consequences for Tehran will be unprecedented.
" If for any reason the mines are placed and not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be on a level never seen before ," Trump stressed.
However, he added that if the possible mines are removed, this would be considered a positive step towards reducing tensions.
" If those that may have been put in place are lifted, that would be a big step in the right direction, " the US president added.
Trump's statement comes at a time when tensions in the Persian Gulf have risen sharply. US intelligence reports have raised concerns that Iran may have begun laying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a corridor through which about a fifth of global oil supplies pass.
A possible blockage of this strategic route could cause a major crisis in international energy markets and further increase oil and fuel prices worldwide.
