US President Donald Trump has said a deal with Iran is very close, something he has been saying for weeks. Now, according to US media reports, he is demanding tougher terms for his envoys to bring them back to the negotiating table. This comes after lower-level negotiators reached a draft memorandum of understanding late last week.
Trump is reportedly unhappy with the provisions related to Iran's frozen assets. It remains unclear what other changes he is seeking, but the move appears designed to increase pressure on Iran and its supreme leader to move more quickly toward a deal.
In an interview with Fox News yesterday, Trump again expressed optimism about reaching a deal. However, he also said the US was prepared to resolve the issue militarily if negotiations failed.
He further claimed that the US had deliberately avoided targeting some parts of Iran's military infrastructure because some elements of the military were politically moderate.
Most recently, Trump said that the US “should not have been in Iran,” which may have been a misstep, or a sign that he overlooked the fact that he personally ordered the military escalation against Iran.
This decision has deeply divided his political base as he campaigned to keep the United States out of new foreign wars.
