US President Donald Trump welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House on the second day of their state visit to the United States. The official welcoming ceremony was attended by senior US administration figures, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During his speech, Trump described the reception as an honor and also referred to previous visits to the United Kingdom, specifically mentioning a stay at Windsor Castle. He emphasized the historic relationship between the two countries, calling the cultural influences the United States has inherited from Britain "rare gifts."
In a more informal moment, the US president joked about the rainy weather in Washington, calling it a “typical British day.” He also commented on King Charles’ accent, saying it would draw attention during his speech to Congress.
Trump also shared a personal memory, revealing that his mother followed the ceremonies of the British royal family with interest. According to him, she expressed particular admiration for Charles, describing him as "very charming."
"Every time the Queen would attend a ceremony... my mother would be glued to the TV and say, 'Look, Donald, look how beautiful this is.' She loved her family so much. But I also remember her saying very clearly, Charles... he's so cute... my mother had a crush on Charles. Can you believe it?" Trump said.
The ceremony was also attended by other senior American and British officials, as well as prominent figures from the business world. King Charles' visit to the US is seen as part of efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries.
