In a rare public criticism of a member of his cabinet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rebuked National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir after the release of a video showing Gaza flotilla activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs.
"Israel has every right to stop the provocative flotillas of Hamas supporters that are trying to enter our territorial waters and reach Gaza," Netanyahu declared. However, he added that "the way Minister Ben-Gvir treated the activists is not in line with Israel's values and standards."
The Israeli prime minister also demanded that the detained activists be deported "as soon as possible."
Earlier in the day, ultranationalist Minister Ben-Gvir published a video on social media showing dozens of Gaza flotilla activists kneeling next to each other and tied behind their backs, while the Israeli national anthem is heard in the background.
In the video, Ben-Gvir is shown waving a large Israeli flag and declaring: "This is how we welcome supporters of terrorism. Welcome to Israel."
The footage has caused strong reactions both within Israel and internationally, while harsh criticism of the minister also came from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.
"You are causing harm to the state of Israel. You are not the face of Israel," Saar declared in his public reaction to Ben-Gvir.
