North Macedonian customs authorities have seized 500,000 euros in cash at the Tabanovac border crossing, hidden in a minibus traveling towards Tirana.
According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle, an Albanian citizen with the initials XH.G., is being investigated for illegal transportation of money and suspicions of money laundering. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against him, while the amount of money and the minibus have been seized as material evidence.
The minibus was carrying seven passengers when it was stopped by customs. During a detailed inspection, authorities discovered a specially constructed compartment inside the vehicle where the money, divided into 14 bags, was hidden.
The Director of North Macedonian Customs, Boban Nikollovski, described the operation as the largest cash seizure in the institution's history.
"This is the largest seizure of cash in the history of our customs. The attempt was prevented thanks to a thorough operation by the Operations Department," Nikollovski declared.
Macedonian authorities are continuing investigations to uncover the origin of the seized amount and other persons who may be involved in this case.
