An analysis published by The New York Times indicates that the February 28 attack on an elementary school in southern Iran may have occurred accidentally during a US military operation against a nearby Iranian naval base.
According to the analysis, the strike on the school in the city of Minab occurred at the same time as a series of attacks carried out by the United States on an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) base located near the area.
The report suggests that the school building may have been mistakenly hit during the operation that targeted Iranian military targets.
US authorities have said they are conducting an investigation into the incident. Washington has stressed that US military operations are not aimed at civilian targets.
Iranian authorities reported that the school attack killed around 175 people, mostly children. So far, this toll has only been published by official Iranian sources and has not been independently confirmed by international organizations or other media outlets.
