From January 1, Milan bans smoking in public places

From the new year, Italy's second largest city, Milan, will ban smoking in open spaces. The City of Milan, in the context of climate and weather planning, decided to extend the scope of the limited smoking ban that it introduced for the first time in 2021 to common living areas such as stadiums, parks, cemeteries and bus stations .

As part of the latest decision of the municipality, from January 1, 2025, smoking in public places will be prohibited.

According to the new regulation, the consumption of cigarettes and tobacco products will only be allowed in certain areas, provided that there is a distance of at least 10 meters from other people. Those who do not respect this rule will be fined from 40 to 240 euros.

Some tobacco manufacturers and traders plan to challenge the new ban in regional court, claiming that the municipality does not have the authority to make such a decision.

A decision similar to the one in Milan took effect in Turin, another industrial city in the north, in April. The city of Turin banned smoking in open spaces when there are other people less than five meters away.
