The 2026 World Cup has gone down in history as the edition with the largest number of fans present in stadiums, breaking the record set in the 1994 World Cup. The news was announced by FIFA, which described this tournament as the most attended ever.

The new record was confirmed during the second half of the match between Germany and Ecuador, held in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The stadium's giant screens showed the figure of 3,605,357 fans, which was greeted with applause from the spectators present.

This number surpasses the record of around 3.6 million spectators registered at the 1994 World Cup, also held in the United States. With 48 matches still to be played and stadiums filled to an average of over 99 percent capacity, the final number of fans is expected to reach an even higher record.

Sports economics experts attribute this extraordinary interest to the tournament's global importance, despite high ticket prices and travel restrictions for citizens of some countries.

" A lot of people would have loved to be at the World Cup, but they didn't have the opportunity ," said Victor Matheson, an economist and sports business expert at the College of the Holy Cross.

Along the same lines, Professor Dan Rascher from the University of San Francisco emphasized that the American public's interest in major sporting events remains very high.

" Americans want to be part of big moments ," he declared.

Commenting on the achievement, FIFA wrote: " The 2026 World Cup is the tournament with the highest attendance in history ."
