Hamas and Israel reached a historic ceasefire agreement, while there are still many issues that have not been made public. The Italian media have shown the key role of Qatar and the intelligence services in finding the consensus.

Most of the mediation work has been done by Qatar. Officials used connections - political and financial - with Hamas, taking advantage of the hospitality extended to the foreign leadership represented by Haniyeh. In turn, Qatar worked with the United States of America, which is used to knocking on the monarchy's doors when there is an opening to be found. The Palestinians naturally accepted it without giving much weight to the fact that the friendly country hosts a significant American military presence and acts as a real shield from the "Zionist enemy".
Israel has also long adapted to having the Qataris as guarantors. It doesn't matter if the guarantees weren't ironclad: Netanyahu had deluded himself that Qatari funding for the Strip would dissuade the guerrillas from launching a new challenge.
