Greek police have seized half a ton (500 kg) of drugs, known as the narcotic substance KHAT, at Athens airport.
The operation was carried out by inspectors of the Independent Public Revenue Authority at Athens Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos".
The illegal substance was hidden inside four shipments of goods declared as curtains, sheets and fabrics, transiting from Israel with the final destination being the US.
In a random check carried out by inspectors of the Athens Airport Customs Anti-Smuggling Department, in the airport's temporary cargo warehouse, they found hidden packages of dried KHAT leaves and seized a total quantity of half a ton. It is estimated that the value of the seized quantity ranges from 1,500,000 euros, Greek media inform.
This is the largest amount of this specific drug substance found.
KHAT, natural coca, as it is also called, is an addictive psychotropic substance extracted from the Catha Edulis plant, which is cultivated in the Horn of Africa, the Southern Arabian Peninsula, and along the coast of East Africa.
