An anti-drug operation in the port of Igoumenitsa, Greece, has led to the seizure of around half a ton of “Skunk” cannabis, which was being transported by truck from Spain. Greek authorities arrested the driver of the vehicle, a Bulgarian citizen, in flagrante delicto, while investigations are ongoing to fully uncover the criminal network involved. According to preliminary information, the drug shipment had left from Valencia, Spain, and had followed a route through Italy, before arriving at the port of Igoumenitsa. The truck had been placed under surveillance by Greek authorities following information received about a month ago from Bulgarian counterparts.
The drugs were discovered during the search thanks to the intervention of a trained anti-drug dog, named "Vlad". According to the published footage, the dog reacted immediately to the back of the truck, where the narcotic substance was hidden inside boxes of paper products, such as towels and rolls.
The truck driver was arrested at the scene, but according to sources he is not cooperating with authorities and has refused to provide information about the trafficking network.
Greek authorities suspect that this is a structured criminal organization, extending from European Union countries to Turkey. The latter is considered a possible final destination, due to the higher price of this narcotic substance in that market.
