Pakistan's army chief, General Asim Munir, has appeared in two different styles of dress in separate meetings with international delegations, drawing media attention to the possible diplomatic symbolism of this change.
According to Al Jazeera reports, Munir was seen wearing a civilian suit during today's meeting in Islamabad with US Vice President JD Vance, in the presence of Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Meanwhile, just the night before in Rawalpindi, he had chosen to appear in military uniform while receiving a high-ranking Iranian delegation, which included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
Photos published by Reuters and AP clearly document this contrast in appearance within a short span of time.
A former Pakistani general, interviewed by Al Jazeera and who served during the Pervez Musharraf era, stressed that there is no set protocol for the army chief's attire at such meetings.
According to him, the choice of attire is often suggested by the staff, in other cases it is a personal decision of the commander himself, the attire can be used to convey a certain influence or message.
He added that even during the Musharraf era, similar meetings were held sometimes in uniform and sometimes in civilian clothes.
