Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has suffered serious injuries and a disfigured face after an air strike hit the leadership compound in Tehran, according to three sources close to his circle cited by Reuters.
The same sources report that he also suffered serious injuries to one or both legs during the attack, which killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as several family members, including his wife and other relatives.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, has not appeared in public or released any images since the airstrike in the early days of the war. He was appointed supreme leader days after the death of his father, who had led Iran since 1989.
Reuters said it could not independently verify the extent of the injuries reported by the sources. Iranian authorities have not issued an official statement on his condition. However, a state television presenter described him as a “janbaz,” a term used for people seriously wounded in war.
Reports from US sources, including statements by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and intelligence assessments, partially match this information, suggesting that Khamenei was seriously injured and may have suffered the loss of a limb. The CIA has not commented.
Experts estimate that, despite his physical condition, he is expected to follow his father's tough political line, relying on ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), one of the most powerful institutions in Iran.
