Two people were killed and several others injured today by avalanches in the Italian Alps, with strong winds hampering rescue operations, local authorities said.
A first avalanche hit the southwestern Maira Valley of the Alps, near the French border in the Italian region of Piedmont, killing one person and injuring two others, according to the Alpine First Aid Service. One of the injured is in critical condition.
Rescue teams set off on foot from lower altitudes after strong winds prevented helicopter crews from reaching the scene, the agency said in a statement.
A second avalanche occurred near Pragelato, a popular ski resort about 60 kilometers west of Turin.
A woman who was trapped managed to free herself but was unable to move due to her injuries. Rescue teams were working to extract her, with helicopters again limited due to poor weather conditions.
Authorities said they were monitoring reports of a third avalanche in Piedmont, but no details were immediately provided.
Separately, in the northeastern Italian region of Veneto, an avalanche on the Vaio Gabene slope in the Small Dolomites killed a 50-year-old skier, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.
Rescue teams arrived by helicopter at the site where the 50-year-old was trapped, but were unable to save him.
