At 1:00 a.m., while most of London was asleep, the quiet community of Stonebridge was engulfed in flames and a scream that will not be easily forgotten. Four bodies – a mother and her three children – did not make it out alive from the house that became a death trap. Two others are in hospital, one in a critical condition.
The names that are sadly mentioned today are Nusrat Usman, 43, her daughter Maryam, 15, and her two sons Musa and Raees, just 8 and 4. Firefighters fought the flames and fate, but the pain was greater than any human effort.
A 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. He was later detained under the Mental Health Act. Suspicions of a dark motive are strong. "It's all your fault!" a desperate voice was heard near the scene. It was Usman Ghani, the head of the family, who tried to enter the burning house. He failed.
The investigation is in the hands of the Special Crime Command. London is once again searching for answers.
