Secret White House briefing gives no deadline for completion of operation. Some senators warn of long conflict and cost of trillions of dollars for the US
The White House briefing did not give a clear deadline for the end of the military operation, while some senators warn that the conflict could last for a long time and cost trillions of dollars.
US senators emerged from a closed-door briefing with White House officials on the war with Iran with differing interpretations of the duration of the conflict. The meeting was held behind closed doors and included senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said the administration presented a scenario in which the US military involvement could end in three to five weeks. That assessment is consistent with several public statements by US President Donald Trump about a short operation.
Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri gave a different interpretation of the briefing. He said he had not heard a specific date for the end of the operation and described the situation as open-ended. Hawley said he would not support sending ground troops and would closely monitor developments in the operation, which he said was rapidly changing.
The strongest reaction came from Democratic senators. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy said after the briefing that he was more convinced that the conflict could last indefinitely. He described the operation as an open conflict that could cost trillions of dollars and has unclear objectives.
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia also said that the end of the operation does not seem imminent. He stated that during the briefing several different objectives were discussed, but no single clear goal for the military operation was presented.
The Senate debate shows clear divisions among US lawmakers over the direction and duration of the war with Iran, as military operations in the region continue and international tensions remain high.
