The S-71K is a low-cost missile designed for mass production. Ukrainian intelligence has published a detailed technical analysis…

Russia continues to develop new weapons to continue the war in Ukraine. In recent days, the S-71K air-to-surface missile, nicknamed "Kovyor", has been introduced. It is designed to be cheaper than traditional cruise missiles, but still able to survive air defenses thanks to a certain reduction in radar detection. Kiev's intelligence agencies claim that the system has already been used in combat since the end of 2025.

Characteristics of the Russian Kovyor missile

According to “The War Zone,” the S-71K (estimated range: 300 kilometers) would represent an unprecedented turning point for the Russian aeronautical industry, in particular for the United Aircraft Corporation, which would have entered directly into missile production.

The missile integrates a warhead derived from a Soviet-era fragmentation bomb, adapted to the new structure. From a technical point of view, it presents a shape designed to reduce radar visibility, with a composite airframe, retractable wings and a modern aerodynamic configuration. However, to keep costs down, it appears to lack advanced radar-absorbing coatings.

Another important element concerns the internal components: many electronic parts are believed to come from abroad, a sign that Russia continues to rely on international supplies, despite sanctions. The guidance system appears relatively simple, based on inertial navigation and most likely supported by satellite signals.

A weapon for the stealth fighter Su-57

Operationally, the S-71K is said to be designed primarily for the Su-57 fighter jet, but can also be adapted to other aircraft, including advanced drones such as the Okhotnik.

Its estimated range, lower than that of the most sophisticated cruise missiles, is offset by the possibility of launching from advanced platforms and the greater difficulty of interception. Alongside this version, Moscow is also said to be developing a more advanced variant, called the S-71M, equipped with real-time guidance sensors and optics.

The S-71 family seems to fit into a strategy that aims to focus on less expensive but numerous weapons, capable of putting pressure on Ukrainian defenses and filling the gap between operational needs and industrial capabilities.
