"We do not recognize the independence of Taiwan", the USA and Russia

Outgoing Taiwan Vice President Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won the election with 40.2 percent of the vote, according to official final results, with votes counted from 98 percent of polling stations.

Lai Ching-te, 64, had been described as a "serious danger" by Beijing because his party declares the island de facto independent. China, which considers Taiwan one of its provinces, had urged voters to make the "right choice", with its military vowing to "suppress" any "independence" movement.

After the election results, the US President Joe Biden also reacted. He said the United States does not support Taiwan independence, as Taiwanese voters are turning against China and gave the ruling party a third presidential term.

"We don't support independence ," Biden said, when asked about Saturday's election.

Hours before the polls opened, Washington had warned that it would be unacceptable for any country to interfere in the election.

Taiwan, a neighboring island that China claims as its own, has been a democratic success story since holding its first direct presidential elections in 1996, the culmination of decades of struggle against authoritarian rule and martial law.

The United States is Taiwan's most important international supporter and arms supplier, despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties with the island.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Lai Ching on his victory and said the United States is committed to maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences without coercion or coercion. He said the US will work with Lain and the leaders of all parties in Taiwan to strengthen their longstanding informal relationship, in line with the US's one-China policy.

Russia also reacted to the election results, saying that Taiwan is part of China and they do not support independence.

"Russia's position towards Taiwan is well-known, consistent and unchanging ," said Foreign Minister Maria Zakhrarova in a statement.

She said the policy is enshrined in several treaties, for example in Article 5 of the Treaty on Good Neighbourhood, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China of July 16, 2001.

In that clause, Russia reaffirms the immutability of its principled position on the Taiwan issue, which is set out in political documents that were signed and approved by the heads of both states between 1992 and 2000.

Zakharova also quoted from the clause that the Russian side recognizes that there is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an integral part of China. The Russian side opposes Taiwan's independence in any form.
