Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin never told him that he would start a war. But he had asked him to cover his shoulders if anything happened before the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
"I swear to you that there was never any word that Russia would act against Ukraine. The only thing is that a few days or a day later, we met with him at his residence in Russia and discussed the situation that had arisen.
Then he told me what I am saying for the first time: Listen, Alexander, the situation is such that if something happens, anything can happen. Can you cover me, please?" said Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus.
Belarusian territory has been used by the Russian military as a strategic military platform against Ukraine. During the interview, Lukashenko admitted for the first time that Russian units had entered Ukrainian territory from Belarus, specifically in the Chernobyl region, in February 2022.
Lukashenko believes that Putin cannot be overthrown and predicts that the Russian leader will be ready to run for re-election in 2024.
