WHO gives the alarm: Measles cases in Europe increase by 30-fold

The World Health Organization has sounded the alarm about the increase in measles cases in Europe by 30-fold.

The WHO warns that cases are still increasing and urgent measures are needed to prevent further spread.

More than 30,000 people were infected in 2023, compared to 941 during 2022.

In the United Kingdom, health authorities have warned of a possible outbreak of the disease at a time when more than 3.4 million children under the age of 16 are vulnerable and at risk of contracting it.

Measles can be a serious disease at any age. It often starts with a high fever and rash, which normally clears up within 10 days, but complications can include pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures.

All countries in the European region are urged to detect and respond quickly to measles outbreaks, in addition to giving vaccines to more people.

WHO said measles affected all age groups last year, young and old.
