The United Nations humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, has warned that the conflict in the Middle East is threatening supply chains and straining humanitarian operations around the world.
Fletcher said today that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could directly affect humanitarian supplies in sub-Saharan Africa.
“ I’m really concerned about food costs, energy costs… fertilizer costs. I’m concerned that further escalation will damage other supply routes. All of this has a direct impact on our humanitarian supplies, including getting them to key areas of need in sub-Saharan Africa. But in a broader sense, it drives up prices and thus pushes more people into greater need ,” he told a press conference.
The UN, he said, is calling on all parties involved to provide ways to allow exceptions for the passage of humanitarian aid.
