The United Nations' top emergency aid official, Martin Griffiths, has stated that people in Gaza are facing the highest levels of food insecurity ever recorded.
Griffiths said Gaza has become a place of death and despair, adding in a press release issued Friday that the death toll has reached tens of thousands, while medical facilities are under attack and there is a lack of functioning hospitals.
" Hope has never been more elusive. Gaza has become simply uninhabitable. Its people are witnessing daily threats to their existence - while the world looks on. A public health disaster is unfolding as sewage overflows and infectious diseases spread in overcrowded shelters. About 180 Palestinian women "are giving birth every day in the midst of this chaos.
Meanwhile, rocket attacks on Israel continue, more than 120 people are still being held hostage in Gaza, tensions in the West Bank are simmering and the specter of further regional spread of the war looms dangerously close ," Griffiths wrote in the report, which was published by The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs almost three months since Hamas launched its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Griffiths called on all involved in the ongoing war to respect international law, including protecting civilians and meeting their basic needs, and releasing all hostages immediately. He called on the international community to use all its influence to help make this happen.
" We continue to demand an immediate end to the war, not only for the people of Gaza and its threatened neighbors, but for generations to come, who will never forget these 90 days of hell and attacks on the principles of basic of humanity. This war should never have started. But it's been a long time coming ," Griffiths said.
