The Russian military has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity by attacking civilian targets in Ukraine's southern Kherson region with drones, according to a new United Nations report.
The report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into Ukraine is the latest evidence attesting to possible crimes committed in Ukraine.
"Russian armed forces have committed crimes against humanity, such as murder, and war crimes, such as attacks on civilians, through a months-long pattern of drone attacks targeting civilians on the right bank of the Dnieper River in Kherson Province," the Independent International Commission of Inquiry report said.
The report describes the attacks as planned and organized.
"The repetition of these attacks for more than 10 months, against numerous civilian targets and over a wide geographical area, indicates that they are widespread and systematic and have been planned and organized ," it further stated.
In late 2022, several months after the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces managed to partially push back Russian troops from the Kherson region. The Russians withdrew from the western banks of the Dnieper River to the east, which is part of this region. Since then, the Russian military has continued to bombard towns and villages on the opposite bank, including the city of Kherson.
In 2023, the Ukrainians attempted to establish a foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnieper to further push back Russian troops, but this attempt failed.
