NATO will ask Germany to provide 7 additional brigades, about 40,000 soldiers, as part of new Alliance objectives expected to be approved next week, Reuters reported, citing three different sources.
According to Reuters, it has not yet been possible to confirm the exact numbers overall and by member state, as the information is covered by a high degree of confidentiality.
However, a general told the agency that in the future NATO should have 120-130 brigades available, 50% more than the current target of 80 brigades.
A government source cited by Reuters puts the target at a total of 130 people.
Germany agreed in 2021 to deploy 10 brigades by 2030. It currently has eight brigades and is in the process of establishing another one in Lithuania, with a horizon of 2027.
The deployment of 40,000 additional soldiers by the Bundeswehr is expected to be a serious challenge, as it has not yet met the target of 203,000 soldiers set for 2018. The current shortage, the agency reports, amounts, according to data from the Ministry of Defense, to 20,000 soldiers.
According to previous information from Reuters, NATO will need 35-50 additional brigades to implement its new plans for defensive capabilities in the event of a Russian attack, and Germany will be required to quadruple its air defense capabilities.
The Alliance's new goals do not yet include the possibility of withdrawing American forces from Europe, as President Trump has repeatedly announced.
