Why is the term "TACO" making Donald Trump 'angry'?

US President Donald Trump has reacted angrily to a question that mentioned an ironic acronym coined in financial circles: "TACO" – short for Trump Always Chickens Out. The term was coined by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong and has become increasingly popular on Wall Street to describe market movements after Trump's tariff hikes are subsequently canceled or postponed.

“There is no withdrawal,” Trump replied, calling the question “one of the worst imaginable.” He claimed it was a negotiating tactic: “You set a high, exaggerated number, and then you go down little by little — that’s how it works.”

Trump tried to justify his aggressive tariff policy against China and the European Union. “I put tariffs on China at 145%, then I brought them down to 100%, and then another level. I told them: you have to open up your whole country.” He also said that only after the high tariffs on the EU did Brussels agree to sit down at the negotiating table. “I put tariffs on the EU at 50% and they called me right away: ‘Please, let’s meet.’ Now we have until July 9 to negotiate.”

Controversially, Trump claimed that this strategy has generated $14 trillion in investment in the US – a figure that has not been independently verified. He used this as a comparison to the Biden administration, which he accused of leaving the US economy in shambles.

But his main anger was over the acronym “TACO,” which he described as “a personal insult” and brought up several times during his speech, calling it “unfair and malicious.” He concluded on a harsh note: “I’m not backing down. In fact, they say I’m too harsh!”
